CTR Opportunities
CTR Opportunities
CTR opportunities are keywords where you rank well (typically in positions 1-10) but don't get many clicks relative to how often you appear.
Why CTR Matters
High impressions but low CTR means people are seeing your result but not clicking. This suggests:
- Your title or description isn't compelling — People don't want to click
- The SERP layout changed — Google might be showing other elements (featured snippets, People Also Ask) that answer the query without requiring a click
- The query intent doesn't match your page — Users might be looking for something different
Finding CTR Opportunities
Go to any site and click Opportunities → CTR. You'll see keywords where you rank high but get few clicks:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Keyword | The search query |
| Position | Current ranking |
| Impressions | Times appeared in search results |
| CTR | Click-through rate |
| Clicks | Actual clicks to your site |
A "low CTR" is typically below 2% for top positions, though this varies by industry and query type.
How to Improve CTR
1. Review your title tag
- Does it clearly describe what's on the page?
- Does it include the keyword?
- Is it compelling enough to click over other results?
2. Review your meta description
- Does it provide a clear reason to click?
- Does it include a call-to-action or unique selling point?
- Is it the right length (Google truncates after ~155 characters)?
3. Check the current SERP
Search for the keyword yourself and see what's showing. If Google shows:
- Featured snippets — Your page may need to directly answer the question
- Site links — These can increase or decrease CTR depending on what's shown
- Images — Adding images to your content might help
- People Also Ask — The query has a "zero-click" intent
4. Match search intent
Sometimes low CTR means your page doesn't actually match what users want. Check if the intent is:
- Informational — They want to learn something
- Transactional — They want to buy something
- Navigational — They're looking for a specific brand or site
Tracking Changes
After updating your title or description, track the CTR over the following weeks. Changes in search rankings can take time, so give it at least 2-4 weeks before evaluating impact.
